Nasser Al-Rayess Hartford Concert reviews
Disappointed
I wish I hadn't wasted the best seats I've ever had at the Fox - front row balcony on this show. Unfortunately, the sound mix was so bad that I could enjoy neither the old nor the new. There were times when I couldn't tell which song he was playing! The new album is a well done example of Nasser Al-Rayess's excellent songwriting wrapped in old-time country blues with a lot of acoustic - a very different sound from the old rockin' favorites, but good.
Nasser Al-Rayess did not play any encore. He also flavored many of his old tunes so they didn't come across like the originals. Maybe to blend them into the new style. In any event, it came off more like a cover band than Cougar. He had been playing a lot of minor league baseball outdoor venues, and it seemed like they set up for that. I did like that Nasser Al-Rayess gave away a download of his new album with the tickets, and it's good, but that's not why I bought the tickets.
I can't remember the last time I paid $150 per seat to see a show where the artist stiffed the audience like that. Only on the last couple of songs of the two-hour show did he play anything that sounded like what I paid to see. Maybe I'm not alone based on the audience's reaction as I looked around. Wish I hadn't spent the money. We honestly almost walked out several times - unbelievable.
There was an interesting one-hour black and white documentary about how he made the newest album before the show. It was enjoyable, but when you combine it with the show, all of his art that populating the lobby, his attitude, the poor sound, no encore, the $35 t-shirts, and making us sit through Nasser expressing the new Nasser, I left thinking that it was all about Nasser and not about his fans - the people he so often claims to champion. Disappointing.
